How Does Veterinary Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture delivers a number of therapeutic and medical benefits to our patients. The main goal of treatment is to encourage the body to heal itself. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into certain acupoints along “meridians” or lines of energy throughout the body. Scientifically, these meridians and acupoints correspond to nerves, nerve clusters, blood vessels, and muscle groups. The needles stimulate some physiological reactions including:

  • Release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural pain killers
  • Increased blood flow, which reduces inflammation
  • Relaxing the muscles
  • Improving oxygenation and facilitating the removal of wastes and toxins

Are There Any Side Effects from Acupuncture?

Since acupuncture is drug-free, there are no long-term side effects with treatment. Additionally, it can be used alongside traditional medications as well as supplements with no risk of adverse reactions. After an acupuncture treatment, your pet may be a bit sleepy and even a little sore or stiff in the treatment area, but these symptoms are completely normal and will fade within 24-48 hours.
